Understanding Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad
The Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) is one of the largest international maths competitions in Asia, designed for students from Grades 2 to 10. SASMO aims to nurture young mathematical talents by encouraging analytical thinking, problem-solving, and logical reasoning skills.
Participating in SASMO helps students improve their school mathematics performance, develop their Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), and provides valuable early exposure to international-level competitions. SASMO expects participation from over 35,000 students representing more than 25 countries worldwide.
SASMO Exam Format and Syllabus
The competition uses a mixed format designed to assess mathematical reasoning rather than rote memorisation.
The SASMO (Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad) syllabus is carefully structured to cater to students from Grade 2 to Grade 10, focusing on logic, reasoning, spatial understanding, geometry, arithmetic, and problem-solving.
Grade 1–4 (Primary 1–4): Arithmetic, statistics, geometry, mensuration, non-algebraic word problems, and basic non-routine problem solving.
Grade 5–6 (Primary 5–6): Arithmetic, statistics, geometry, mensuration, word problems (model/algebra), and non-routine problem solving.
Grade 7 (Secondary 1): Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, graphs, mensuration, statistics, and non-routine problem solving.
Grade 8 (Secondary 2): Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, graphs, mensuration, Pythagoras’ theorem, statistics, and non-routine problem solving.
Grade 9–12 (Secondary 3–4, JC 1/2): Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, graphs, mensuration, Pythagoras’ theorem, trigonometry, statistics, probability, and non-routine problem solving.
